The Turkish Angora is a small to a medium-sized cat with an adult male and female weighing 8-11 pounds. Life expectancy of the Turkish Angora is estimated between 12-18 years.

The History

Though we don't know for sure, the Turkish Angora most likely originated in the mountainous regions of Turkey (thus the name!), where it developed an unusually soft, medium-long coat for protection against the harsh winters.

Some say it evolved from the Manul cat, a breed that can be traced as far back as 16th-century France. For many years, all longhaired cats were referred to simply as "Angoras."

In the mid-1960s, the Turkish angora became large enough to seek recognition from The Cat Fanciers Association.

The Appearance

Turkish Angoras have a soft, white, silky coat that rarely mats and requires only minimal grooming. Though recently, breeders have focused increasingly on colored cats. Most breeders recommend combing once or twice a week with a fine-toothed comb or slicker brush to remove excess hair and keep the coat looking and feeling its best.

The Angora has a long body, long, slim legs, long tail, long coat, large ears and wide eyes. It is a dainty cat, with fine bones, a slim chest, and a super soft coat that belies its hardiness.
